| Through the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act
(DSHEA), Congress acknowledged that dietary supplements play an
important role in disease prevention and health promotion. That is why
DSHEA authorized the creation of a new office within the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) to focus specifically on advancing the study
of dietary supplements in this country. Called the Office of Dietary
Supplements, ODS started operations in November 1995 by promoting an
open dialogue among scientists, academicians, government agencies, and
industry regarding the science of dietary supplements. With this
original feedback, ODS then established five national goals that have
formed the basis for federal research efforts:
